Back to School Looms

It's about a week before back-to-school makes the transition here from a looming threat to a current crisis.

Our second daughter is returning to college around the end of the month. It's been great, having all four kids under the roof this summer. Right now, I'm a safe two rooms away as daughters #2 and 3, and my wife, watching "High School Musical 2." The ladies tend to whoop, loudly, at parts they like.

Daughter #1 is with me, doing something with her new laptop, in the area we're using for computers and music now.

I'm going to miss #2 when she leaves. But, that's how life goes.

Our son is, most likely, with the ladies, and probably oblivious to anything other than whatever he as going on, in the laptop that he 'inherited' from his big sister.

Earlier today, my wife and #2 daughter got part of the north face of the house painted today. They rented a sort of do-it-yourself cherry-picker for the job. We live in a farmhouse that got enveloped by the town. It's somewhat higher than most houses are, these days.

Good grief! I haven't posted since Monday. I don't know if I should call the week busy, or crazy. I'll settle for busy. That has a better ring to it.

You are painting too, huh.
I'm painting the house we are renting right now.

Once you get hired to paint a house it never ends!! People observe me and want their own house painted. It kinda sucks because I'm a little afraid of heights ;)

Five kids huh!! Same like our family - 2 brothers and 3 sisters! The women still manage to dominate the house though! hehe!

I'm curious - you are the second person who has mentioned Back to school in mid August! Here, in Malta, we are still in the height of hot summer and school is but a distant thought not to happen for another month or more so!

Lupideloop,

Here in the States, schools start opening around mid-to-late August.

I'd have to check to be sure, but it seems to me that the school year has been getting longer over the years.

Originally, the summer break was planned to accommodate northern temperate zone planting-to-harvest farming.

With less than 1% of the population directly involved with agriculture, that isn't necessary any more.

However, I wouldn't mind having kids be free from the schools for longer than they are now.

Another thing: normally, here in Minnesota, it's hot here, too. Although I suspect that Malta out-performs us in that department.

"Normal" and "Minnesota" don't go together all that well. Someone quipped, "Minnesota doesn't have a climate, it has weather."

We had highs around 60 F. a few days ago, in the 80s now, and who knows what next week.

Keeps life interesting.
